Frequently Asked Questions

What happens during my first pelvic floor physical therapy appointment?

Your first visit is an opportunity to slow down, talk about what you’re experiencing, and create a plan that feels right for you. We’ll begin with a detailed conversation about your symptoms, health history, daily activities, and goals. Your physical assessment may include looking at your posture, breathing patterns, mobility, strength, coordination, and movement, as well as how your core and pelvic floor muscles work together.

Do I have to have an internal pelvic floor examination?

You are always in control of your care. An internal pelvic floor evaluation is never required and will only be performed with your full, informed consent. If you choose to have one, it may provide additional information about pelvic floor muscle strength, coordination, tone, tenderness, and the ability to relax and contract the muscles. We’ll discuss your options throughout the visit, and together we’ll create an individualized plan based on your needs, comfort level, and goals.

What should I wear?

Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move easily. Leggings, athletic pants, shorts, or other nonrestrictive clothing are great choices. Depending on your concerns and the focus of your visit, you may be asked to move through different positions or perform simple movement assessments.

Do you accept insurance?

Harmony Pelvic Health PT is a self-pay, out-of-network practice and does not bill insurance directly. Payment is due at the time of your visit, and a superbill can be provided upon request for you to submit to your insurance for possible reimbursement. Coverage varies by plan, so I encourage you to check with your insurance provider about your benefits before scheduling.

Can I use my HSA or FSA to pay for my visits?

Heath Savings Account (HSA) and Flexible Spending Account (FSA) cards are accepted. Please check with your insurance provider or plan administrator before your appointment to confirm that services are eligible for reimbursement or payment using your HSA/FSA funds.

Do I need a referral?

Maine allows you to see a physical therapist directly, without a physician referral. You can schedule an evaluation with Harmony Pelvic Health PT to discuss your symptoms, concerns, and goals and determine whether pelvic floor physical therapy is appropriate for you.

If you plan to seek reimbursement through your insurance, please check with your insurance provider to determine whether a physician referral or other documentation is required for coverage.

If your symptoms suggest a condition that is outside the scope of physical therapy or would benefit from further medical evaluation, I will recommend that you follow up with the appropriate healthcare provider. I’m happy to collaborate with your medical team when additional care is needed.

How do I cancel a visit?

I understand that life happens, and sometimes plans change! You can cancel or reschedule your appointment through the Jane online booking system up to 24 hours before your scheduled visit. For changes within 24 hours of your appointment, please contact me directly by phone or email. You’re also welcome to contact me directly at any time.

To respect everyone’s time and allow other patients the opportunity to schedule, the following cancellation policy applies:

  • First missed or late-cancelled appointment (within 24 hours): No fee; one-time courtesy

  • Second missed or late-cancelled appointment: $50 fee

  • Third missed or late-cancelled appointment: The full appointment fee will be charged

Exceptions may be considered for unexpected circumstances.

What if I am pregnant?

Pelvic floor physical therapy can be a helpful part of pregnancy care. Treatment can be tailored to your stage of pregnancy and may address concerns that commonly arise during pregnancy. We can work on strategies for supporting a more comfortable pregnancy and postpartum recovery. Please let your provider know if you are or may be pregnant.
